Drywall is going up in the new house, so I am at the stage where i need to pick my interior colours. However, the builder uses Sherwin Williams and while I have used Sherwin Williams and like their paints, I wanted to use only Benjamin Moore paints. While i know Sherwin brand of paint colours are great, I've painted with both and prefer Benjamin Moore paint as I prefer the durability...I also am partial to their Aura line. Do you think i'm making a big deal? My painting allowance limits me to just two shades of paint. If i want to use more than two colours, then that is at an additional cost! I consider myself a professional painter, so it's painful for me to pay someone else a ton of money to paint. On the other hand, i would love to have the house painted in the colours i want before i move in. What do you all think? Should i just wait until i move in to paint the colours i want or suck it up and pay the extra to get it done now?
Click here to view the tour of this home that has the fun office featured in the pic above. BTW, all the wall colours in this tour are Benjamin Moore paint colours:-). Happy Thursday my lovelies! xx
shut up!! this is not paint related.. but I've been haunted by these southwestern/ikat rugs the last 2 days! I think it's a sign. I need one.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thursday. Glad things are moving along quite nicely. I too am a fan of Benjamin Moore. I think you should suck it up and pay the extra money. You'll have so much to do it's best to have the house painted for when you are set to move it. It will be a great feeling. One less thing to do. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteIt is very helpful and motivational as well. I really informative the content and image of your blog. House Painter Atlanta, Roswell, Alpharetta, Marietta and all around in Georgia. MyFourSeasonsPainting is a painting company offering interior & exterior house, residential and commercial painting services.
ReplyDeleteI, like you, am a Benjamin Moore fan and have used it for years. I would probably just pay a little extra and stick with what you love!! Lots to think about...
ReplyDeleteI like Benjamin Moore a lot too - and consider myself a pro painter like you. This is tough. Why can't they just use the paint you want?? I realize you already answered that, but I just don't like the "policy" (rules = me in the corner).
ReplyDeleteAnyway - I think you should get the paint you want. It's your brand new house. Do it the way you would love it to be done!!
xo,

I would just pay the money now and get it over with. would be so much more relaxing to move in!
ReplyDeleteI wonder do you have the option to use 1 painters colours in anothers paint. Here in Aus we can quote a painters colour and the other paint company can either look up the code and mix or colour match. Maybe you could get a sample pot of the colour you want and ask them to colour match for you?
ReplyDeleteI also think you should just do it the colours....you will be so happy you can move straight into a coloured home rather than moving things around once your in. But my hubby is like you and refuses to pay anybody to do a job he can do himself.
xK
Totally up to you - is the extra cost and colors close enough to what you want? Otherwise, it's your house and if you want something else, wait.
ReplyDeleteLove all the books..you can never have enough books:)
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
Dearest, I think you are wise to insist on what YOU WANT. You are refined, indeed to even know what brand works best! I am in the same boat in that my two NEW ROOMS ARE GOING UP FAST and I know EXACTLY WHAT I WANT IN TERMS OF COLOR. But, what I do not know is how to achieve that color!!! What a gorgeous room here....is this one of the colors you are looking for?SIMPLY CHIC! Anita
ReplyDeleteLike you I prefer Benjamin Moore paints and while you said you paint you didn't say if you enjoy it or not? If you enjoy hang the painters, if not then pay the extra. I know whatever route you go it's going to be fabulous after seeing your last house.
ReplyDeleteI'm torn on this one. If it's really that much of a preference & a matter of you going over your budget then do it yourself, or if it's within your budget let the builder do it. You will have enough to when you moved in putting things put away once you get moved in.
ReplyDeleteI would pay the extra to avoid the hassle.
ReplyDeleteThe painter I rely for all of my design jobs likes Sherwin over Ben too. He switched from Ben because he said quality has dropped. He is excellent so I believe him.
But why don't u color match. Most paint stores already have other major companies formulas in theta computer. Newsy peasy: Ben colors mixed in Sherwin.
BTW, the only paint hard to color match if Farrow&Ball. That is because their colors are so rich in pigment ( and what makes F&b so great). My favorite paint, I spec it whenever a client is willing to pay the extra $. The result is so worth it.. And my painter confirms that f&b paint is great.
I LOVE choosing color. Have fun!:-). Lynn
I wish I could give you a worthy advice. I have absolutely no clue in this area. Hope you get what you want though! :)
ReplyDeleteA tough one! It's hard to shell out extra that you haven't really budgeted for. On the other hand, it's your place and I really believe in having the colours you want to be happy - it'd be hard to compromise on something that can have such a big effect! (Think of how it might bug you within just 1 week of moving into a home where the paint is not *quite* right! May be better to get it done right the first time around :))
ReplyDeleteMy adviceis is to pay the extra money and get it done NOW, before moving in!!! Trust me, I´ve been renovating my home for almost 10 years now. Me and Dan(spouse) loves to do everything on our own, but some things are just better to leave behind and let others do, even if it´ll cost a little extra money! Time is precios and I´m sure it´ll feel so much better to move in to a completely ready house once you´re there!
ReplyDeleteGood luck dear!
Tough choice - but I do prefer Benjamin Moore as well. If you can swing the extra cost, I think it would be worth it - you will be so much happier getting it done before you move in with the colors you want!
ReplyDeleteI'd bite the bullet and pay the extra money, you'll be happier in the long run.
ReplyDeleteI'd say cut a corner in an area that doesn't matter as much to you to get what you want with this because it's obvious very important to you. You will be looking at those walls every single day, make them sing to you.
ReplyDeleteI think I would just pay extra now and have it all done so later you dont have to worry...Its easier that way:)
ReplyDeleteKisses, sweetie
if u can afford it i say pay to do it now. one less thing to worry about once u move in
ReplyDeletejust found your beautiful blog through little blue deer! love your blog. i'll be coming back to visit! xxoo
ReplyDeleteHere in the states we can choose a paint color from any line and the stores can duplicate it under the brand we want. Do you have that option? I picked a BM color and Sherwin Williams duplicated it. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
As a color consultant, I use Benjamin Moore Paints. I love the Aura bath paint, one coat and you are done, usually. I like to have my painters quote me by the hour rooms at a time instead of by the job. You know that I am sure but...love their colors too.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you are making too big of a deal. You only get two shades of paint so you have to make your choice wisely!
ReplyDeleteI understand. I vote Benjamin Moore, the extra money will be worth it!
~Zabrinah
and i vote...benjamin moore and pay a little more money...have it finished for you when you move in...you deserve it, darling. did i tell you i am the voice of reason?
ReplyDeletegreat post!
ReplyDeletethankyou for the comment on my blog :)

We're waiting and painting after we get the key, before we move in. My dad is a whiz at mixing colours so I don't think I've ever in my life had a just-out-of-the-can colour on my wall. He customizes :)
ReplyDeleteI love to paint, anything from faux to canvas to murals and of course simple walls. SO, first I would say it's got to be Benjamin Moore (if not Fine Paints of Europe) and if it's straight color and you know which colors you want then I would hire someone to do those and the rest of the rooms you can tackle when you move in.
ReplyDeleteps If you're like me you'll be painting and repainting for years to come!!! xoxo
Hi Stacey.
ReplyDeleteHmm...well, I used to use Sherwin Williams and love their colors, but have use BM and have been happy with them (mainly because I have a BM paint store right down the street from my house). I have to say that the Aura line is amazing. I recently repainted a room in Decorator's White and wowsers! In the end go for what you want and the colors you love.
you know, we ran into the same kind of issue with our builder -- except they would only paint the entire interior ONE color, before charging for each ACCENT wall. insane right? so we just had them paint everything the color we wanted the ceiling to be (cause who really wants to paint a ceiling amirite?), and then we changed everything slowly after we moved in.
ReplyDeleteour original plan was to have a week overlap with our last days in our apartment and paint everything before we moved everything inside. but with closing delays, builder delays and then my father's stroke, those plans went up in smoke.
painting around all our stuff was a challenge, but cost a HECK of a lot less than any other option available. plus we got some funny stories from the whole experience.
of course, we don't have little one to try to keep tabs on as well...
sorry for the novel! :P
ps - you'd think with the cost of building a home, you'd actually get something you WANT instead of something you have to settle for, eh? crazy business.
congrats on your new home! cant wait to see pics. Id say they are both good. Benjamin Moore seems to be more popular but I'm not sure that is necessarily because of better quality.
ReplyDeleteI had good experience with both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams. I have painted a lot over the years with SW and have tried pretty much every single brand. We are presently using Benjamin Moore paint colors on all our doors and trim, and it looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteyou can get benjamin moore colors made at sherwin williams lol its not a matter of color but quality
ReplyDeleteAll your hard work is much appreciated. Nobody can stop to admire you. Lots of appreciation. Door Installation
