Jamie Drake’s colourful apartment.

It’s no surprise to me that Jamie Drake of Drake design would be fearless with colour. He has a portfolio that is filled with gorgeous colourfully designed spaces. In retrospect, as i look at his apartment, it would have made a great addition to my purple love post earlier this week. The New York City apartment is infused with vibrant explosions of magenta, yellow, pink, turquoise and a more sober orchid. The talented Connecticut native has turned a staid 1895 loft into an out-pouring of sensual sophistication. “I’ll try anything,” he says. “Shapes, colors, textures; juxtaposition can be thrilling.” I love a designer who is fearless and willing to experiment:-).

1920s chairs and a gilded, turn-of-the-century “throne” covered in Donghia fabric proudly hold their ground in a living room that feels distinctly contemporary.
A Louis XVI reproduction chair in Glant’s chocolate-brown silk velvet, above, sides a 1960s bookcase from a Paris clothing store.

“I love it when the eye dances from space to space,” Drake says. “Color will lead you to where you’re supposed to look.”

With the long, narrow configuration of the apartment footprint, Drake incorporated a number of circular forms. In the more subdued dining area, chairs from John Boone surround a round table by J. Robert Scott.

In the master bedroom, Clarence House zebra fabric covers the bed custom designed by Drake.

According to the feature article, Drake covered the guest room’s headboard in ivory horsehair and antique nailheads. From a petite hand-painted screen to the grass-green lamp, and the jewel tones of an antique mirror and F. Schumacher draperies, Drake embraces color back and forth. I doubt one can be sad in an apartment like this, right? So fun!
